  • January 1, 1879: Lucy Seaman Bainbridge sailed from Providence, Rhode Island to begin her first trip around the world, which included stops in Japan, China, Burma, India, Egypt, The Holy Land, Germany, Paris, and England.
  • January 3, 1793: Lucretia Mott born in Nantucket, Massachusetts.
  • January 3, 1966: Marguerite Higgins died in Washington, D.C. Was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in International Reporting (1951).
  • January 5, 1939: Amelia Earhart declared legally dead after disappearing in July 1937.
  • January 6, 1944: Ida Tarbell died in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
  • January 6, 1929: Elizabeth Bisland Whetmore died of pneumonia in Charlottesville, Virginia. She was buried in the same New York cemetery as her round-the-world rival, Nellie Bly.

  • January 22, 1925: Fanny Bullock Workman died in Cannes, France.
  • January 25, 1890: Nellie Bly arrived in New Jersey on 3:51 p.m., having circumnavigated the world in 72 days, 6 hours and 11 minutes. She beat rival Elizabeth Bisland by about five days.
  • January 27, 1922: Nellie Bly died in New York City. She was buried in the same cemetery as her round-the-world rival, Elizabeth Bisland Whetmore.

  • January 30, 1961: Dorothy Thompson died in Lisbon, Portugal.
  • January 30, 1890: Elizabeth Bisland arrived in New York after having circumnavigated the world in 76 and a half days, about five days behind her rival, Nellie Bly.
